For the first time, CAPHIA is hosting a Public Health Hackathon in Brisbane from 24th to 26th September 2024. This event, a collaboration between CAPHIA, the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland, and UQ Ventures, will bring together public health students, early career academics, entrepreneurs, community members, and industry innovators to address a significant public health issue.

Focusing on ending domestic violence, the hackathon will combine public health strategies with design thinking principles. Student teams, guided by mentors and Design Thinking Ambassadors, will tackle challenges such as creating safe community spaces, supporting men and boys as allies in prevention, and changing attitudes and beliefs about gender.

The three-day event includes meeting the hackathon team, diving deep into the problem and potential solutions, and practicing pitches to present to delegates at the CAPHIA Teaching and Learning Forum. Participants will be trained in Design Thinking to enhance their skills.

Eligible participants are current public health students from CAPHIA member institutions in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. The hackathon will take place in person at the Saint Lucia Campus, University of Queensland, in the award-winning Global Change Institute Building and adjoining Steele Building. Registration and limited travel bursaries will open soon. For more details, visit the FAQs page.
