GovHack is Australia’s largest open government and open data hackathon, attracting in excess of 1000 participants each year. Described as a “festival of ideas”, GovHack is the premier hackathon of the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world.

GovHack requires small teams of competitors to produce any kind of “hack” using open government data in around 46 hours, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The format of a “hack” is unspecified, but the most common are web apps, mobile apps, visualisations, and artworks. All source files are must be published in an open-source repository and open-licensed. Teams can be any size and are judged on their project page and the three-minute video they produce.
