The Australian STEM Video Game Challenge is a free competition that encourages students in years 3 to 12 to design and develop original video games around a central theme. In 2025, the theme asks participants to create a game that takes players on a journey. Teams of one to four students plan their projects with guidance from dedicated mentors, and entries are judged by both teachers and industry professionals. Winning teams have the opportunity to showcase their games at a major gaming event, where they can share their work with a broad audience.

Participants also gain valuable skills in creativity and problem-solving, and may be invited to additional showcases that highlight the potential of STEM-focused education. The challenge provides curriculum-aligned materials for mentors and independent resources for students, ensuring that the development process is both accessible and engaging. Throughout the competition, teams refine their ideas, document their progress, and submit a final entry that demonstrates the depth of their innovation, technical understanding, and storytelling. The top submissions receive prizes and recognition, including a custom hoodie that features artwork from their winning game, as well as exclusive opportunities to connect with the wider gaming and STEM communities.
